Course Description:

This course is designed to identify, apply, and practice the leadership skills necessary to affect greater positive social change through the lens of the profession of social work, using cultural competence, empowerment, and self-reflection as guidelines. Students develop competencies necessary for the enhancement of leadership, management, and supervision skills. This course includes theories of leadership, leading change, communication and negotiation, team building, collaboration, ethics and values, critical thinking, leadership competencies, and networking tools. Students work to discover, understand, and enhance their own personal leadership styles and strategies. The course is taught using lecture, discussion, in-course exercises, videos, guest speakers and graded assignments. The sessions are organized around theories of leadership, core attributes of social work leadership, personal paths to leadership, history of leadership in social work, strategic management, resource management, program planning and team member and personnel management, board governance and relations, managing stress, avoiding burnout, and practicing self-care, and developing reflective practice.
