Motivation for Teaching Social Action:
I created the Advocacy Scholars Program at MSU for Social Work students interested in careers in public policy, advocacy, activism and/or systems change and I teach the capstone course for students in this program: Advanced Advocacy Skills for Promoting Social Justice. This program sounds like a valuable opportunity to deepen the social action focus in this course and for embedding social action education into another course that I will be teaching for the first time in the Spring: SW822 Topics in Policy Practice & Advocacy.
Course Description:
The official course description is: "Exploration of specific target populations or areas of need and related public policies. Information and skills for policy practice and advocacy." It is one oof two required policy courses for MSW students and covers beginning advocacy/social action skills (e.g. how to write an op ed, lobby a legislator) and a deep dive on U.S. social policy for a specific population (in my case children and families).
