Motivation for Teaching Social Action:
I endeavor to embed principles of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) in all of the courses that I teach. As a political scientist, its important that I teach my students about opportunities for policy advocacy and to be civically engaged in their communities and in our democracy. It will be useful to learn an experiential model for social action that can be incorporated in my courses.
Course Description:
This course examines the history of disability policy and advocacy in the United States and its evolution over time. This course also analyzes how public policy is socially constructed and how our legislative representatives influence what policies and groups are prioritized in education, housing, environmental and other critical policy areas along with the distribution of social and economic resources. Intersectional disability identity politics will also be considered.
